Sprawl and the destruction of open spaces
The Center is working with local citizens and citizens' groups in Greenbrier and Monroe Counties to oppose and propose alternatives to a new four-lane highway that would replace portions of US 219 from North of Lewisburg to Organ Cave. The Center believes that the Department of Highways intends to continue the road through Monroe County to connect Interstate 64 (Lewisburg exit) to US 460 in Virginia. This road would have disastrous consequences for the protection of farmland and the Greenbrier Valley watershed generally. We fear the DOH's ultimate goal is to upgrade US 219 into a four lane highway from Corridor H near Elkins all the way to Virginia. This road would create sprawl and radically change the character of the entire Greenbrier River watershed.
